How to Choose a Brand Photographer in Surrey

Portfolios all look good. Here's what actually separates brand photographers - the questions to ask, the red flags to watch for, and what you should expect to pay in Surrey.

Search “brand photographer Surrey” and you’ll find plenty of us, all with attractive portfolios. That’s the problem - a portfolio tells you someone can take a good photo. It doesn’t tell you whether the photos will work for your business. Here’s what to actually look for, from someone on the inside of the industry.

Start with the question most people skip

Before comparing photographers, get clear on the job the images are for. A website rebuild, a LinkedIn upgrade, a product launch and “I just need content” are four different briefs with four different right answers - different photographers, different session types, different budgets.

If you can’t answer “where will these images live?”, the best photographer in the county can’t save the shoot. If a photographer doesn’t ask you that question before quoting - that’s your first signal.

What separates a brand photographer from a good photographer

They start with strategy, not the camera. Before any session in my studio, we’ve talked about your positioning, who the images need to convince, and what formats your website and content actually need. The shoot is designed backwards from that. A brand photographer who takes a brief in one line - “just some nice shots of you working” - is a wedding photographer in different clothes.

They direct. Most people are not natural in front of a camera, and the difference between stiff and magnetic is direction - how you’re posed, talked to, and put at ease. Read the reviews specifically for this. Mine say things like “I was so nervous, but Polly instantly put me at ease” - that’s not me being lovely, that’s the actual craft, and it’s what you’re paying for.

They deliver a usable library, not a memory card. Ask exactly what you get: how many final images, retouched to what standard, in which crops and formats. “300 lightly edited images” is a burden, not a deliverable. You want fewer, better, ready-to-use files - retouched, sized for where they’ll live.

They understand where images go now. Vertical crops for stories, banner formats for LinkedIn, hero widths for websites, motion clips if your content needs them. If a photographer only thinks in landscape prints, your website builder will be cropping heads off in a month.

The questions to ask before booking

  1. What do you need from me before the shoot? (A good answer involves a conversation about your brand, not just a date.)
  2. What exactly do I receive, and when?
  3. Who does the retouching, and to what level?
  4. Can I see a full client set - not the portfolio highlights?
  5. What happens if I hate being photographed? (Listen for how they direct, not reassurance.)
  6. How do the usage rights work? (You want clear commercial use of your own brand images.)

What it costs in Surrey (honestly)

Rough, real-world bands for 2026: a directed studio headshot session sits around £300-£600 - mine is £495 + VAT for a thirty-minute directed session with five retouched images. A designed studio brand shoot with multiple looks and a proper image library typically runs £1,500-£3,000 - mine starts at £1,950 + VAT. A full content day on location, shooting events, B-roll and social-first imagery, starts around £1,200 + VAT.

Cheaper exists. It usually means no direction, no strategy conversation and a folder of files you’ll never use. Photography is one of the few brand assets where the middle of the market is the false economy.

Local, practically speaking

I shoot from my studio in Weybridge, which puts most of Surrey within an easy drive - Esher, Cobham, Guildford and the surrounding towns. Sessions are personally directed - when you book me, you get me, not an associate.

The short version

Choose the photographer who asks about your business before your outfit, directs rather than just shoots, and hands over files with jobs to do. The portfolio gets them on your shortlist - the strategy conversation is what should get them the booking.
